“The Strife Is Over” is arranged here as an advanced piano solo with a strong Easter hymn character and a broad four-page build. The arrangement begins with firm chordal writing, then moves through repeated hymn statements, a more flowing middle section, and a heavier final page with thicker chords and a bright upward ending. Since this is my arrangement, I kept the hymn melody clear while expanding the texture into something fuller than a basic congregational setting.
Measures 1–32 present the main hymn material in a strong chordal style. The melody sits clearly in the upper voice while the lower voices support it with repeated chords, bass notes, and broad harmonic movement. The opening stays fairly direct, but the repeated chord patterns give it a firm Easter-processional character.
Measures 33–56 continue the hymn statement with a lighter and more melodic texture. The right hand carries longer phrase shapes while the left hand keeps simple rhythmic support underneath. This section has less vertical weight than the opening, giving the arrangement a little more space before the larger build begins.
Measures 57–80 move into the main flowing section. The right hand uses repeated broken figures and moving patterns above longer left-hand support notes. This creates more continuous motion and gives the middle of the arrangement a brighter, more lifted sound before the final chordal section.
Measures 81–104 form the final large statement. The texture becomes heavier again, with repeated block chords in both hands, stronger bass support, and a fuller hymn-style sound. The final measures rise into an 8va passage and close with a broad final chord, giving the arrangement a strong and triumphant ending.
Interesting fact: “The Strife Is Over” is based on the Easter hymn “The Strife Is O’er, the Battle Done.” The hymn is traditionally connected with the tune VICTORY, which is adapted from music by Palestrina and later shaped for English hymn use by William Henry Monk. Hymnary lists the tune in many modern hymnals, which shows how strongly it has remained part of Easter worship.
