“Were You There” is arranged here as an advanced piano solo with a solemn spiritual character and a broad four-page build. Since this is my arrangement, I kept the melody clear and direct, but expanded the setting with chordal writing, broken left-hand motion, a darker middle section, and a fuller final statement before the music settles into a quiet ending.
Measures 1–20 present the opening statement of the spiritual. The right hand carries the melody in a simple, sustained line while the left hand supports with bass movement and broken accompaniment patterns underneath. The texture is spacious at first, but the harmony and inner motion give the arrangement more depth than a plain hymn setting.
Measures 21–44 continue the main material with a more chordal texture. The melody remains in the upper voice, while the left hand alternates between broken figures, bass notes, and slower harmonic support. Near the end of this section, the key signature changes and the sound becomes darker, preparing the more active middle section.
Measures 45–64 form the main flowing middle section. The right hand moves into repeated notes and steady broken figures while the left hand keeps a continuous accompaniment pattern underneath. This section has more motion than the opening, giving the arrangement a stronger emotional push while still keeping the reflective character of the spiritual.
Measures 65–84 bring back a broader final statement. The texture becomes more chordal and full, with stronger bass support and larger right-hand harmonies. The final measures gradually settle into sustained chords, closing the arrangement with a quiet, serious ending rather than a dramatic finish.
Interesting fact: “Were You There” is one of the most widely known African American spirituals connected with Holy Week and Good Friday. Its repeated question-and-answer text gives the hymn a very personal character, which is why it continues to be used in church services, choral settings, and instrumental arrangements.
