Beethoven’s Bagatelle No. 4, Op. 119, No. 4 is a gentle piano miniature in A major, marked Andante cantabile. The piece has a calm, singing character, with a smooth right-hand melody, quiet left-hand support, and a short contrasting middle section. Unlike some of Beethoven’s more playful bagatelles, this one is more lyrical and reflective, built from graceful slurred phrases, soft dynamic shaping, and a return of the opening dolce idea near the end.

Measures 1–8 introduce the main melody. The right hand carries a flowing line with small sixteenth-note figures and long slurs, while the left hand supports it with sustained notes and simple broken motion. The music is marked dolce, and the small crescendo and diminuendo markings help give the phrases a gentle rise and fall.

Measure 9 functions as the ending of the first section. The first ending leads back to repeat the opening material, while the second ending moves the music forward into the middle section. After the repeat, the music becomes more unsettled. The left hand holds longer tones while the right hand answers with short fragments, rests, and quick decorative figures. Beethoven adds several sfp markings, giving this middle section a more surprising and expressive character than the opening.

The music then builds with a short crescendo and a quicker descending right-hand passage. A marked R.H. dim. leads back into the softer dolce return. Measures 16 to the end bring back the opening style, with the right hand again singing above a quiet left-hand accompaniment. The final measures keep the same gentle character and close the piece with a simple, peaceful ending.

Interesting fact: Beethoven’s Op. 119 bagatelles were eventually published as a set of eleven pieces, but they came from different periods of his life. Some of the early numbers, including pieces from Nos. 1–6, were connected to older sketches that Beethoven later revised for publication.
