Marked Allegro deciso, this C-sharp-minor prelude has a compact, assertive design. Quick rising figures push against sustained chords before the motion turns downward.
The first three measures place the moving line in the bass while broad upper chords establish the harmony. The upper voice then becomes more active, followed by a brief passage in longer notes with chromatic color.
The final flourish descends through the upper register into the bass. A low arrival, a pause, and a held closing chord give the ending a clear sense of weight.
Interesting fact: The fastest material changes register during the piece, creating a larger arc from the lower voice to the upper voice and back down again.
